I recently had the privilege of travelling to the Bokong River with my Dad, and what an awesome trip it turned out to be. Fishing aside, getting the opportunity to spend that much quality time with my dad was absolutely world class.
I had spent months prepping and tying flies, phoned dozens of people and asked hundreds of questions and by the time the trip rolled around, I felt as if I was properly geared up.

The Bokong river, situated just above Katse Dam, is an incredibly clear and pristine river that holds some beautifully sized trout and yellows. We travelled up in February, so our target species was the Yellowfish, however, I caught far more trout than yellows.

I had expected the river to be running high after all the rain we had received around the country, but I was wrong. The river was extremely low and made for some difficult fishing with the yellows becoming super spooky but we managed some good fish none the less. My dad hooked and landed his first yellow fish on fly which sparked a bit of yellow fever in him and he is now completely hooked, mission accomplished.

I would highly recommend this trip to any keen fly angler. It is by no means a “shooting fish in a barrel” kind of trip, but it is incredibly rewarding and can really turn on when conditions are right.

If you would like any info on fly’s or tippets etc. please feel free to give me a shout .
